Role of the Mayor in Brevard
In Brevard, North Carolina, the mayor's role is primarily ceremonial and administrative, with limited executive authority. Brevard operates under a council-manager form of government, which means the city manager handles most day-to-day administrative duties. Here’s a breakdown of the mayor’s key responsibilities:
1. Presiding Over Meetings
- The mayor chairs City Council meetings but does not vote, except to break a tie.
- Ensures meetings are conducted in an orderly fashion and in accordance with North Carolina laws.
2. Representing the City
- Serves as the official representative of Brevard at public events, meetings, and ceremonial functions.
- Acts as the face of the city when dealing with local organizations, other governments, and the public.
3. Agenda and Policy Influence
- Works with the City Manager and City Council to set meeting agendas and shape policy priorities, but cannot unilaterally pass laws or enforce policies.
4. Proclamations and Community Leadership
- Issues proclamations and encourages civic engagement.
